Lieder album coming up...
In February 2022 I hope to record a new album, titled Lieder (German songs). Read below everything there is to know about this very exciting project!
In the Autumn of last year, I recorded 10 Christmas Carols after quite a period of not singing (at all!). Just to find out whether or not I could still sing, whether or not I wanted sing again, and to find out how it felt. After this project I decided to continue singing but thought almost immediately: 'What do I want to do as a singer?'. Over the years I have done quite a few different things as a singer and I realised that quite often (for whatever reasons) I have been singing/making music I was not so much passionate about, and that this was where my answer was to be found: making music I am passionate about. So, as I have always considered myself a classical singer, I decided to go to my roots as a classical singer and produce an album with repertoire that I have been passionate about since I started singing, and always kept returning too: Lieder.
Programme & Repertoire:
A repertoire of 20 pieces has been selected, including songs by Haydn, Mozart, & Beethoven, Schumann, Franz & Brahms, with at the centre of the programme songs by Schubert.
A bit more on 'Why this repertoire?'
I already wrote something about the reason behind the chosen repertoire in the introduction, but here something more in depth about this:
1. My passion for and affinity with Lieder, which came when I started having singing lessons with my first vocal teacher Annette Essers. Since then I have always been singing some Lieder - whatever else I did too. In a certain way my 'roots' are with the Lieder repertoire when it comes to singing, and the affinity is especially there with the Classical/Romantic Lieder repertoire, more then any other repertoire.
2. I feel very much at home with this repertoire - my latest singing teacher wrote once: [...]'He has such an affinity with Lieder, he seems to simply understand the intimacy and the refinement, and he also seems to like the simplicity in the clear cut duo or teamwork - just himself and the accompanist.' [...] I could not have explained better myself!
3. Because the subjects of those Lieder are still so relevant: I do try to see them as poems before I look at them as songs. These poems, later (beautifully) set to music by the composers, cover themes which are still very much relevant in today's life; Love, Nature, (Be)Longing, Life and they also tell Stories, Legends & Myths which can still inspire us today. Whatever revolutions, wars, technological advancements and changes the world experienced in the last 200 years, in essence humanity/mankind did not change and those themes and poems cover exactly those aspects of life that did not change. And this is why we, many years after those poems were written, might recognise something in those poems, which were so beautifully set to music by some of the great(est) composers. Those Lieder have formed the basis for Art Songs in several languages and inspired composers and musicians all over the world, ever since Schubert significantly changed the Lieder genre and put it for ever on the map.
So, for all foresaid reasons an album with 20 Lieder: 6 by Haydn, Mozart & Beethoven (2 each), 8 by Schubert and 6 by Schumann, Franz & Brahms (2 each), and I am looking forward already to presenting the album to you!
