2024 Album - David Llewellyn Green: Organ Works - Volume 1

Today, June 4th, 2024 sees the release of the first volume of a new album series, featuring Organ works by British composer David Llewellyn Green (June 4th, 1935 - June 26th, 2014). The album is available for streaming and/or purchase on all major streaming platforms, as well as for purchase on this website, where it comes with a very extensive and informative booklet. In this article I would like to share the prefaces Gareth Green (David's son) and I wrote for the album booklet.

Preface written by Egbert Juffer:
As a publisher I have been working with David Llewellyn Green's music since 2017, when I received a box full of manuscripts by David, from his son Gareth with whom I was studying at the time. Many of David's compositions were published during his life, but became unpublished when the main publisher of his music went out of business, and at some point David's (life)work(s) sadly ended up biting dust at the loft of Gareth's house. Many of the pieces being handwritten manuscripts, I started working through these scores, (re-)notating them one by one, and in 2018, 4 years after David's passing, the first pieces were published (again). At the time of writing this note, 94 of his compositions have been republished and are available, with many works still left to publish, as he wrote a significant amount of works. A large part of the now published works are David's works for Organ, with only a handful of Organ pieces left to get published. With the project of releasing David's sheet music for Organ coming to an end, I came to the bold plan to record all his Organ works in an album series. This release is the first Volume of the series ‘David Llewellyn Green: Organ Works’, featuring David's Harmonisations and Variants of Hymn tunes, alternated by his Liturgical and Modal Interludes. Following volumes will be released over time, with as many volumes as needed to have his entire output for Organ complete and recorded. The timing of all this happening is impeccable: June 4th, 2024 - the release date of Volume 1, would have been David's 89th birthday, as well as June 2024 being the 10th anniversary of David's passing. May he rest in peace and rise in glory, but until then: May many appreciate and enjoy the music he wrote.

Preface written by Gareth Green:
I consider myself extremely lucky to have been given such a fabulous upbringing by my parents. Unfortunately, not everyone can make that claim. To this day, my father remains the prime musical influence on my life. He was a superb organist, pianist, choral conductor, and teacher and if what I leave to the world in those areas is even a fraction of his legacy that would feel a worthwhile contribution. His passion was composition and I am absolutely thrilled that a student of mine, Egbert Juffer, entered the music publishing business and has initiated this very significant publication of my father's music. Thus there is a direct link between the composer and the publisher that I am sure fills my father with heavenly joy. Please enjoy the music and share it with the world.
