Organist Carson Cooman played another Organ work from my hand, this time the Theme and Variations in F minor, Opus 19, which I wrote in 2022.
The Theme and Variations in F minor, Opus 19, was written in 2022 as part of the portfolio for the AVCM diploma in Composition, which I obtained in the same year, see blogpost here. I recorded this work twice myself, and even though I am the composer of this piece, neither of my performances capture the mood as well as Carson's performance does here. Both his interpretation and performance are brilliant, so needless to say, I am very happy with Carson's recording of the Themes and Variations.
Carson writes about the piece: Theme and Variations in F minor, Op. 19 (2022) is expressive and sombre music with a tragic/sad atmosphere. A slow, chorale-like theme is followed by four variations. Unlike most variation pieces, where the variations explore widely contrasting moods, the sad atmosphere remains throughout. Thus instead of changes of pace, the variations re-imagine the thematic material in terms of melody and texture, while keeping the mood consistent.
