Yesterday, October 21st, 2024 saw the release of the second volume of the album series featuring Organ works by British composer David Llewellyn Green (June 4th, 1935 - June 26th, 2014). The album is available for streaming and/or purchase on all major streaming platforms, as well as for purchase on this website, where it comes with a very extensive and informative booklet. In this article I would like to share the preface I wrote for the album booklet of this second volume.

The preface written in the booklet of Volume 1 provides a general overview of the project of publishing David Llewellyn Green’s music – hence I would like to point to Volume 1 for this information. In terms of programming I would also like to refer to Volume 1 of this album series, as this second Volume progresses from the previous Volume onwards: with the programme of Volume 1 being filled with David’s Hymn tune Variants and Harmonisations, alternated by his Liturgical and Modal Interludes, the programme of this second Volume consists of Hymn tune Preludes, Hymn Improvisations and a Fantasia. Each Prelude is based on a (well-known) Hymn tune, and is followed by an Improvisation (and in one case a Fantasia) on the same Hymn. David wrote the Improvisations at a later time than the Preludes and used for each Improvisation the same key as the Prelude on the same Hymn, meaning each Improvisation perfectly fits after the Prelude on the same Hymn. The programme of this album features the 12 Hymn tune Preludes of which also Hymn Improvisations and a Fantasia were written by David, as he did write more Hymn tune and Chorale Preludes, as well as another Fantasia; these will all appear as a separate programme on the third Volume of this series.
